I’m Zhenguo Zhang, a bioinformatics scientist and mentor with over 20 years of research and development experience spanning gene regulation, genome evolution, and cancer diagnostics. I enjoy turning complex biological data into insights that help researchers answer questions and develop useful tools.
My bioinformatics journey began during my doctoral studies at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, now the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health. There, I studied nonsense-mediated mRNA decay, alternative splicing, and codon usage.
I continued this work as a postdoctoral researcher with Dr. Masatoshi Nei at Penn State University and Dr. Daven Presgraves at the University of Rochester. My research explored population genomics and the evolution of gene regulation, including alternative splicing, microRNAs, and dosage compensation.
In 2017, I joined Zymo Research Corp., where I supported next-generation sequencing (NGS) assay development and helped customers analyze and interpret their data. I also led the development of DNA methylation analysis pipelines and worked on methylation-based algorithms for cell type deconvolution and noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT).
Most recently, at Exact Sciences (now Abbott), I focused on cancer biomarker discovery. I analyzed DNA methylation, fragmentomics, and RNA data and built machine learning models for cancer detection using liquid biopsy and stool samples.
Today, I want to bring that experience to a broader community of researchers, laboratories, and organizations. Through data analysis, pipeline development, and training, my goal is to help people solve practical problems and move their research forward.
